Dear ,
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I find decision-making to be pretty stressful. I had five big decisions I needed to make and they all had a money component, which made them even more stressful.
Which should I do?
What if I choose wrong?
Is there a way to use mindfulness to help me make my decisions?
I did some research and found 4 mindfulness techniques that tap us into our higher self and our wise inner compass.
Do you have a decision you need to make?
Give these a try.
They work and they work fast!
Mindfulness Techniques for Decision-Making
1. The STOP Technique:
- **S**top what you’re doing.
- **T**ake a few deep breaths.
- **O**bserve your thoughts, feelings, and body sensations.
- **P**roceed with your decision after you’ve checked in with yourself.
The STOP technique reduces stress and improves decision-making because it gets you into a state of calm and clarity.
2. Body Scan:
- Focus on each part of your body, starting from your toes and moving up to your head.
- Notice any tension or discomfort.
- Reflect on whether your body is signaling any resistance or ease toward the decision.
The body scan works because it makes you aware of physical sensations in your body (tight stomach, clenched jaw, tight shoulders), which can often tell you how you truly feel about a decision.
3. Mindful Visualization:
- Visualize yourself having made each of the potential decisions. When you decide yes, how does it feel? When you decide no, how does it feel?
- Pay attention to how your body reacts, the emotions that arise, and the overall sense of peace or discomfort.
- Which decision feels lighter and more spacious?
Visualization techniques activate areas of the brain associated with planning and decision-making, which helps us feel more confident about our choices.
4. Journaling for Decision-Making
1. Make a Pro & Con List (with a Twist):
- Write down the pros and cons of each option.
- After listing, take a moment to meditate, practice deep breathing, or do a quick session of Notice Name Relax Release.
- Revisit the list. Has your perspective on any of the pros or cons shifted?
Journaling, combined with mindfulness, improves insight and clarity because it shines a light on the emotional impact of the decisions you are making.
These techniques only took me a few minutes to do, but they were invaluable. I will absolutely use them again. I feel so much more peaceful now, and when I talk about what I decided, I can hear how clear and confident I am.
