My previous author announcement was about needing to refocus on audiobook narration to help pay for my bills. Then write after I make my monthly bills.

I like thinking of things in terms of schedules. Wednesdays are early release days for the kiddos, so I'll make that my day for auditions for more audiobooks for a couple of hours, then I'll write for an hour while my son is in OT.

It takes around 4 hours for me to complete a finished audio hour (It used to take me 8-9 hours, I've gotten better at punch and roll over the years.)

An average-sized book is around 8-10 finished hours, and I can finish around 2 finished hours in a day before the kids return from school. Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri.

So, I can realistically complete a single audiobook in a week. I'll probably need to record at least 2-3 audiobooks to cover the overflow bills. But that leaves an ENTIRE week that I can still dedicate towards writing every month! It's a blood bath out there in the voice over industry. By that, I mean, there are a lot of us out there vying for the same jobs. My only solace is that not everyone is available during the same timeframe and having an available time slot is half the battle!

If I'm unable to secure 2-3 jobs a month, then I'll have to go back to the corporate grind, and my creative bones are rebelling against the idea. Sooo, that's why I'm starting early! September is my first month that I really need to make my hustle work for me. Before, I've just taken on a job here and there by word of mouth, narrated for my own books, and focused on my writing. Now, I've done 7 auditions on ACX over the week, and I've been hired for one of them so far! That's right! I'm bringing someone else's book baby to life!

I had fully expected to be auditioning for a week or two before landing any jobs, because I can't realistically take on the royalty only jobs at the moment. I'm only auditioning for jobs that are willing to do Royalty Plus, so at least I get paid partially for my time and potentially paid the rest with royalties, but I'm happy to report that I'm well on my way already!

For those who aren't as familiar with audiobook narration it can take around 40 to 80 hours to bring a book to life and being paid on royalties alone only works if the book sells enough to eventually pay a narrator around 250 per finished hour, which is around $25 an hour wages. When a narrator takes Royalty Plus 50 per finished hour, that's less than a $1.00 an hour for their time, in the HOPES that the rest of their wages will be paid in royalties over the course of time. We are betting on an author's success.

Who knows, maybe my books will pick up while I'm narrating and I'll get a boon month where I get to write more. Things are looking up my bookish fiends!
