Transferring your ebooks from Kindle to Kobo is ending!

Hi , welcome back to my author newsletter with alien peens, monsters, magic, and the readers who love them!

Yes, you saw correctly. If you haven't heard already, on February 26th 2025.

The only way to move your books from Kindle to other platforms like Kobo, is to download and transfer via USB. Back when Kindles used a USB to computer to move books from the internet onto your device. I actually remember my first Kindle that was barely connected to the internet, and plugging it into the computer was how I added most of my books.

With the rise of piracy issues, and the whole case with AI being sketchy as F about using illegally obtained books to train its programming, it makes sense that Amazon is ending the download and transfer service. Both because of the piracy issues and the liability of this ability to download, but also because technology has advanced enough that it isn't necessary. UNLESS, that is, you wanted to move to a different platform.

This change would mean your whole digital library is at the mercy of one company, and should anything happen to it, or you decide you want to test the waters elsewhere, this change would mean you lose it all.

I'm against using this feature to remove DRM and add to piracy issues, but I am supportive of people having the right to move their books from Kindle to another platform. So, if you don't want to repurchase loved books in the future, you have until February 26th to use the feature and backup your books to the cloud.

After this date, you should consider that buying books directly from indie authors as the BEST option in the future for the versatility of most of them provide a book through Bookfunnel, and this platform allows you to download your book file and transfer your file to WHATEVER platform you want, from Kindle to Kobo.

I'm seriously considering making my whole platform wide, and enrolling my books into Kobo Plus to allow readers more options, from buying my books direct from my author store, to grabbing the book with whatever platform they prefer, but I know that many of you are super attached to Kindle Unlimited, and so I'm thinking perhaps I do a rolling launch instead.

Have my books be in Kindle Unlimited for 6 months, then roll them out into wide distribution after? I'm just feeling like the KU platform, though large, is rather limiting, and becoming more so as time goes on.

How to download your books from Kindle before the change?

Account --> Content Library --> "Content" --> "More Actions" --> "Download and transfer to USB" Then save your files to your cloud in a folder as ebook backup just in case you ever want to have access to your favorite books outside of Kindle.

I haven't seen a "mass download" option, so if you have LOTS of books, it's best to pick your TBR/favorites because as far as I know it's a one at a time download situation.

Tuesday Author Updates!

Over Valentine's Day was also mid-winter break for the kiddos. I took my daughter to a movie date to watch Paddington on Thursday, and took her to the Valentine's Jump Session at a bouncy house place on Friday. I celebrated dinner with my hubs the weekend before, because I hate crowds, and I can never say no to Indian butter chicken with garlic naan.

I have been struggling with finding time to write over the last month because it was like chaos took over from the flu, to kids conferences week early release, then snow days, then mid-winter break. Time just flew by.

I'm going to knuckle down and get some work done, but this month delay in productivity may mean that one of the books I wanted to have done by May, will be pushed back. This is one of the reasons why I have stopped having pre-order due dates, because this uncontrollable circumstance would have given me a lot of unnecessary stress.

Also, my brain decided it wanted to write multiple things at once, so I've been hopping around between projects.

All of my books are standalone alien romances, each a separate complete romance, read in any order, and with their interconnected plots, each book layers and you find out more about the world the more you read. Have questions from one book? Read another one, and you're sure to find more answers, and perhaps more questions as the universe unravels. That's what I love about sci-fi adventures set in the same universe, there's so much room to play!
