what men want to read in their sci-fi novels, is it different than women? also... It's my birthday!

I was intrigued by a recent article by Author Media that said, "How to Write What Men Want to Read"

There was this statistic that 30% of men read and 45% of women read. So, because of this difference, publishing houses have shot the men's sci-fi genre dead.

As an indie author, it doesn't really matter to me what traditional publishing houses are doing to kill their readership, but another thing intrigued me about this article.

I'm not here to bash the article and cry foul play for them saying men and women are different and want different things in their reading, but I'd say every reader has different preferences for their sci-fi books.

It says men want adventure, horror, and science fiction. They want the "info dumps" that most female readers hate in their books, because men want to learn something as they read.

I have to say, as a woman, I rather enjoy a bit of philosophical blurbs here and there in my books as well. I don't believe that's a man thing per say, just a reader preference.

I think "info dumps" are actually another way of saying "world building" in most sci-fi novels really.

And in my own book Her Alien Savior, I've had quite a few reviewers state that they did not enjoy all the extra exposition I put into the book and that the book could have been cut in half. So, I guess I did a bit of fun sci-fi what-if discussion within the inner monologue of the characters when world building that book that some loved and some hated.

In fact, Her Alien Savior Won the 1st place badge from the Paranormal Romance Guild Reviewer's Choice Awards for 2023! When you write for what some people love, others will hate it. Her Alien Savior now has 133 ratings on Goodreads with a 4.12 average star rating with 72 people marking the book as currently reading!

I'm pretty sure that yes, a majority of my readers are female, but I'd wager many are male and non-binary gendered as well.

Alien romances are inclusive, because the whole point of an alien romance is the "otherness" and differences between species and societies coming together and finding acceptance and love.

I adamantly believe that many male readers love LOVE as much as any female reader. I feel like to exclude romance from a book is to remove an aspect of life, and the world becomes a little flatter instead of immersive.

I think you'd really like Her Alien Savior if you're open to fated mates, sci-fi adventures, plenty of world building, a few choice spicy scenes that will have your lashes burning (including an FFM scene before the fated mates realize they are fated.) Lots of lovely licking, blood play, and exhibitionism. It's plot and spice!

And of course, I think what makes all of my alien romances so much more enjoyable is that every standalone book is interconnected.

If you have lingering questions about unanswered plot threads in one book, I assure you, more of your questions are answered when you layer the book with one of the other books in the universe. They can all be read by themselves, but when you put them together the universe expands and more questions are revealed and old questions are answered, creating a rich playground to explore.

I will reply to every email, but expect a delay, as I have the "FUN" task of spending several of my birthday hours learning the LAW and the PTA this morning as I've been nominated as one of the board members for my kid's school and the class is mandatory. (I am not thrilled to be a PTA member, but my kid's school is on the cusp of not having enough members and volunteers where the whole school would lose a lot of fun things for the kids, and I'm compelled to make sure the PTA stays alive so we have things like book fairs, popcorn days, field trips, student store, movie days, yearbook, and dances.)
