Dear GreenCardGuys Community,
Applying for a green card is a major life milestone, but your case is about much more than just filling out forms. Small mistakes, missing documents, or inconsistencies in your immigration history can create serious roadblocks-many of which are completely preventable.
To help you stay prepared and give your application the strongest possible foundation, we've put together a "Before We File" Checklist:
Be upfront from day one
Share your full immigration history: past visas, denials, deportation or removal orders, and any time in immigration court. Surprises later can stop a case in its tracks.
Be honest about any arrests or criminal history, even if it was dismissed or happened years ago. Leaving something out can be treated as fraud, and that's much harder to fix than the record itself.
Keep your story consistent: your addresses, jobs and marriage history should match what you've told immigration in the past.
Gather your proof of entry
Passport with entry stamps
I-94 record
Any parole or visa documents
Prove your relationship is real (for marriage cases)
Joint lease or mortgage
Shared bank accounts or bills
Photos together over time
Divorce decrees or death certificates for every prior marriage, for both spouses
Show financial support
Recent tax returns
Pay stubs and an employment letter
If your income isn't enough, line up a joint sponsor early
Do your medical exam on time
Schedule with a USCIS-approved doctor
Don't open the sealed envelope!
Watch the expiration date
Send foreign documents early
Birth certificates, marriage certificates and other non-English documents need certified translations. The sooner we have them, the sooner we file.
Sign everywhere it's marked
One missing signature can get your whole package sent back.
Get the payment right
Fill out the credit card form completely
Make sure there are enough funds available. A declined card means a rejected filing.
Respond fast if USCIS asks for more
If you get a Request for Evidence (RFE), send us the documents right away. Missed deadlines are one of the top reasons cases get denied.
Keep us in the loop
Moved? New job? Got married? Any police contact? Tell us right away so we can keep your case accurate.
Best regards,
