Hey Luvs!
Her Alien Delegate launched this week on Tuesday, and even though I had my doubts about whether I was writing a book that my fans wanted to read or not, you've definitely assured me during the launch week that people do want to support my books and read more from the universe. That makes me very happy, and I'm relieved that Her Alien Delegate might actually break even on launch costs within launch month.
We are 61% of the way towards breaking even on launch costs of bringing Her Alien Delegate to life.
Hopefully, if the book continues to do well, that I can save up funding to afford editing for the next launch!
My goal is to one day be able to be paid for my writing time, and not simply avoid bleeding out on hobby funding by breaking even. Breaking even is a luxury many indie authors don't get to claim, so I am truly grateful, but I'd also like to have this be my career that puts food in my belly, and a roof over my head one day.
An insight into the mind of an indie author is that most negativity or self-doubt is easier to weather when you can face those burdens with the truth of how our words are wanted and valued enough to support. When we can tell ourselves and others that our books pay for themselves and for the food we eat, and the coffee that fuels us.
In the author industry, every book is a crowd funding experiment. Many readers must come together to support a book. An author needs a legion of readers.
That is around 5 to 6 thousand readers.
With a budget friendly book launch at around 1,000, and it may take around 3 months of writing to create with an average workers income of around 3,000 a month (where I live it's around 2,000 just for renting a 2 bedroom apt) That means the book should hopefully make a minimum of 10000 within a year of launch, though preferably 18000 to give a month for launch marketing and a break between books. that means around 50000 a year for 3 books minus the launch expenses.
So, in order to make a "living" as an author, each book should bring in around 18,000 within launch year. With an average income of around 2.7 per book when bought, or 1.2 per first kindle unlimited read through. (pages read after the first read through are not paid for, even if you read them in a different month than when you paid for the subscription.)
That means an author does in fact need a legion of readers to become a full-time author. That is around 6666 readers needed to buy a book, or if 70% of readers buy and 30% read in subscription that would take 4,666 readers to grab the book and another 4,354 readers in KU to make up the 30%.
Now, that's 9,000+ readers every year to make a living as an author. And that's if every reader read 3 books from me in a year. (As, of course, I would be their trusted favorite author.)
My biggest successful book is Her Alien Savior, totally 1,400 dollars earned with 641 from e-books, and 711 in KU pages read, and 56 in paperbacks. (I'm not including paperbacks from bookish events, as most of the time those events break even or cost me more than what I spend.) It cost me 900 to bring Her Alien Savior to life, meaning it's made a total of 500 in the past two years, since it came out August 2023. And I spent that 500 and more back into my author platform in giveaways to build my newsletter list, including over 8,000+ downloads of the book from two stuff your e-reader days.
I know my books are in the hands of well over 20000+ readers between Her Alien Savior's giveaways, the 10,000+ readers who have grabbed Her Alien Exchange free from this newsletter, and the giveaways for Jewel of the Alien Bandit. Perhaps, it's just a matter of learning Facebook Ads? Perhaps, it's just a matter of time. But, I know writing is in my blood and bones.
One day, I hope I can say that my books are more than a hobby, but my job. With each book released, it takes less and less readers in the legion needed to help support my books, because 1 fan can read through my whole backlog, and be the equivalent of 5 or 10 readers.
I spent 500 in launching Her Alien Delegate, and we are 61% towards breaking even. Once it breaks even, it joins the rest of my books towards paying off my author start up costs and my maintenance costs for my platform.
With 8 full-length books available, I need around 4444 books purchased to break even on my author platform costs and finally tell myself that my books finally buy me a cup of coffee from profit. 4,444/8, that's around 555 readers per book needed. I average around 5 to 6 new readers per book per month. It would take me around 111 months or 10 years to breakeven at my current rate of readership before I ever make a penny for my own time. It seems daunting to think about, but I don't plan on giving up. I just need to find a new strategy.
I guess I need to study up on advertising and hope my fans will help spread the good alien peen word in the meantime.
Thank you for supporting my books, because if it wasn't for you, I would have stopped sharing my books a while ago.
xoxo

All of my books are standalone alien romances, each a separate complete romance, read in any order, and with their interconnected plots, each book layers and you find out more about the world the more you read. Have questions from one book? Read another one, and you're sure to find more answers, and perhaps more questions as the universe unravels. That's what I love about sci-fi adventures set in the same universe, there's so much room to play!
Happy Reading and Thank you for being part of my author journey,
xoxo
