Hey ,
I was reading my latest alien obsession, and I thought to myself, "Why do I like alien romances so much? What is it about them that makes me devour them like they were the sustenance that keeps me alive?"
I would say I thought LONnnng and Hard about this (winky face), but really, it's just a constant question that comes up when I either come across a part in a book I really like or find myself with the urge to skip over bits.
This is really, why I expanded out from reading them to writing them myself, because as much as I love reading other people alien romances, when I write one, I'm fulfilling whatever mysterious thing that I was craving, but didn't feel quiet fulfilled with what I was reading.
Not to say what I was reading was bad, just that at any given time, my desire for more or less science, or more or less smut within the romance differs with my mood.
Thus, the Science to Smut quotient was born in my brain.
Let's say I read a great alien romance but I am 50% through the book with not even a fun make-out snogging, or good ol' fingering, or oral fun with the romantic interests... well, I got to say, I consider that a slow-burn alien romance and as much as I might enjoy the book, I start craving the more sinful side of the genre by this point.
This 50% marker is part of my Science to Smut quotient.
It's just my preference that smutty goodness happens before 50%, even if that's some self-care action as they longingly think of their alien hottie, or something.
I still enjoy a good science fiction book, but when I pick up alien romance with a half nekked alien on the cover there is this expectation I have with the smut to science ratio.
Thus, when I come across the ones that don't have the smexy goodness before 50% I divert to my own writing for a bit, or read a straight up alien erotica and "imagine" that perhaps those are the character's dreams or something, and then I get back to the book I was reading, because even though I have a quotient of expectations, doesn't meant that lessens my desire to know the rest of the story, and stick it out for the big showdown at the end when they accept their love and then smash their bodies together in lust-filled abandon.
My second science to smut ratio is the acceptance stage of the relationship.
Sometimes, I come across an alien romance that gets the show going right away, insta-love, wham-bam thank you alien peen, and then we come into the problem of whether the plot is intriguing enough to pull me through to the end if I feel like the characters have already accepted their love for each other.
We have all the smut, but I've already predicted the plot, and the tension/relationship struggles don't feel interesting enough to continue reading.
Smut overpowered the science/relationship and the ratio is off for me.
If this happens, I'm less likely to continue reading or even finish reading the book. If I don't feel invested with the characters and the plot isn't interesting enough to pull me along until I do connect with them.
Soooo, this is why I like to read all the alien smutty goodness, and also write it as well. There are lots of great alien romances to read, but when I write one, I'm guaranteed to like what I wrote to help get me out of a slump and it inspires me to give new alien authors a chance, because if they give me a great time, I'm happy, and if they don't well, they've also inspired me to write some more! haha.
Writing Her Alien Prince... my first sexy scene is Chapter 4 with a small taste of finger love, but they deny that they should be together, though they are drawn towards one another, Chapter 13-14 for their next encounter, but turmoil ensues, and then the big finale towards the end with acceptance. It has all the lovely angsty emotional feels I like in a couple struggling to accept that it's okay to be selfish every now and then, and a plot that surprises even me.
I'm a plantser, (author that plans a bit, but is a glorified transcriptionist recording what the characters do in the mind's movie theatre.) and so there are things that I write down and I stare at it for a bit going... did that just happen?
My alien lovers, I enjoy writing for my personal favorite ratio of smut to sciencey plot. And I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Her Alien Prince is in the editing stages, getting all amped up for typo killers and ARC readers this, month! Soon, my pretties, soon! Keep an eye out for your chance to be an ARC reader!
