What I use to write my alien romances is...

A distraction free writing device

A majority of my writing is done in a confined space with little distraction. And I've been able to write more than I ever could before by writing on a typer that is free from being connected to anything else but my story.

No, this isn't an advertisement or an endorsement for anything.

In fact, the device I use most often is actually something that isn't even in production anymore.

The Alphasmart was used exclusively in K-12 schools for many years since the 1990's and not until around the 2000s was it in production to consumers and the one I use today is an Alphasmart Neo 2. That's right, the typer I use most frequently is actually something that is more than twenty years old and it STILL works as intended.

I will admit I did have a snaffu with the device a couple years back when it needed a reboot and I lost the words I wrote on it, but other than that one time, I haven't had an issue with it. And to be fair this error happened after I had mishandled it and it was fine after a reboot.

In order to save myself from too much dismay, I upload my words to a computer for backup after every writing session. Over vacation, during a time that I would normally not be able to focus to write, I wrote over 4,000 words on my Alphasmart Neo 2. Words I would not have otherwise written with kiddos and the chaos around me, but with my typer device, since all it does is type, it isn't something my kids interrupt me as much as if I were on a phone or tablet. My daughter (almost five) comes up to me and asks, "Are you writing books? Can you write me a story about unicorns?" Sometimes when I read her a story at nighttime she asks if I'm the one that wrote the book.

Honestly, this alone makes me want to write a chapter book for ages 5 to 8 just for her, so that I can say, "yes, mommy wrote this book for you!" But, I'm not completely sure I'd do a great job at writing a book for that age group, but I think I'll give it a whirl as a creative exercise! She doesn't like how short the stories are in picture books, and I've begun reading books normally for 7-9 year olds because they don't really have many books for 5-8 that are chapter books.

Back to what I write on!

I did upgrade to a newer distraction free writing device four years ago and loved it for two years, which had the same convenience and portability but also the ease of pressing a single button to have the file sent to my email or backed up on my computer. That is wonderful, but I did say "two years" and after that the device was unusable and I reverted back to twenty-year old technology that STILL works today!

I did not get the newer device repaired because it was too much money for proprietary hardware to be fixed. The cost was not worth the ease of uploading my documents and potentially having the same issue next year and spend more money to fix it.

So, back to my Alphasmart Neo 2 I went, and I pray to the tech gods that one day soon there will be a comparable product to this older technology that has the convenience of uploading the data without the proprietary hardware and software that would make repairs a hardship. I want the NEXT Alphasmart that is as hardy as the old tech, but with modern conveniences.

Until then, if you want to join the distraction free era, then definitely look into the old school Alphasmart Neo2! I bought mine for 35 used on Ebay several years ago... I did a quick search these days and apparently, they've become popular enough that they are going for 100 now! I would never sell mine though. It's mine forever even if I upgrade in the future this beauty will decorate my shelves in an honored spot for all of its days.

My writing:

I finished book two Breaking Fate and it is off to Tracy, my editor! I brought my Alpha Smart Neo 2 with me on vacation to continue writing book three.

The name is Reaping Olympus

I thought about wrapping it up to just be a duology, but I couldn't bring myself to chop it up like that.

So, yes. VICTORY. We are on to book three!!

Despite the series not being as popular as my alien romances, I want to see the story to the ending I envisioned when I started. I'm hoping that after it's completed more readers will take a chance on it.

This is a slow-burn romance, so unlike my alien romances, there is a wait for spice that's why I have it under my S.M. McCoy name instead of Sky Robert. Setting expectations and all that. Over vacation I wrote a chapter in Her Alien Delegate (EVIE'S STORY) and a chapter in Reaping Olympus book three of the Dark Gods Rising Trilogy.

I need to get back to writing Her Alien Starbreaker so that it's all ready for the Anthology, but other than that book, which I have to have submitted before November, I have the whole summer free to write whatever I want without the pressure of a deadline or a preorder planned that I have to meet a certain date. This is freeing in a way, and I might actually be more productive without the stress. I've never missed a deadline that I made for myself, every book I've put up for preorder has been completed and sent out by release date, but I have decided not to make any more preorders for anything that I don't already have a draft off to the editor. For my own sanity. But, I'll probably get a bunch done with my youngest going off to kindergarten this coming year, I'll have more time to write!

Her Alien Starbreaker My goal is to have this completed before end of September 2024 for an anthology. Best of all, the personal cover for the book is commissioned by Deborah Garcia! So, this is the first cover I have made from commissioned artwork instead of cover designers! (Note: I make sure all my covers are done by designers that do NOT support A.I., No A.I. is used for my covers, nor my writing. I R hooman.)
