Today is the last day of 3rd grade for my son, and the official start of SUMMER BREAK! (Well, one more week for my daughter, she doesn't have her graduation from pre-school until next friday) I was really hoping that I would have the first draft of Breaking Fate finished by today, but things have been a bit more busy than I anticipated.

I'm still plugging away! I'm at 82% of my word count estimate! Also, I got a little distracted and started writing Her Alien Captor early (Necia Alien Warriors Series). It's how my brain works sometimes.

Procrastination is something I've always struggled with, and why it took me over 8 years to write my very first completed draft of a story. But, I've found if I just embrace the procrastination, and redirect it, then I'm always productively procrastinating towards completing something.

This procrastination cycle is how I was able to meet all of my self-imposed book deadlines. I was procrastinating writing Her Alien Insurgent when I wrote Her Alien Warrior instead. I was procrastinating writing Breaking Fate when I finished Her Alien Insurgent. The important thing is that I'm still writing and created a habit for myself that even if I'm not writing what I'm "supposed" to be writing, I'm always writing something, or reading something.

I also have to force myself to stick to only having a few projects to rotate through at a time. That way, I eventually finish a project and don't just have several unfinished starts. Which I did for many years. I know myself better now, and work with myself instead of beating myself up about it. Having hyper focused procrastination has been reframed as an asset, and not a hinderance.

It's also helpful for cleaning the house sometimes... I get all obsessive for like a day or two, and everything is nice and organized... for a short amount of time. My focus shifts all the time, I usually binge things. Reading, writing, gaming, watching K-dramas, trying to learn a new language. Often times, this leads to never finishing anything, but I get a big brain high when I finish something and it gets easier and easier to finish a book with each launch!

My first book took me 8-9 years! My second book 2 years, my third book, 1 year. Then I started my alien romances! I wrote my first alien romance in 6 months, set it aside, this was Jewel of the Alien Bandit. Then I wrote Her Alien Exchange for November 2022, took me one month! Then I wrote Her Alien Prince in 3 months, and Her Alien Savior in two months. Her Alien Warrior was written in two months! Her Alien Insurgent took me a bit longer because I wrote the whole thing then scraped it and wrote the whole thing from scratch again, but still I wrote the second draft in two months! I think that's my average time at the moment, but most of that is possible because my mind is avoiding working on something else.... So, perhaps the house isn't as clean as it was during those two days I couldn't think about anything else.

Knowing yourself is power.

It was really hard to finish my first book, but I'm glad I did, and even though my very first book isn't available anymore, I wouldn't be where I am today without it.

The reason why I fell in love with alien romances is because there is something special about the true acceptance of differences and that wonderful feeling of being loved by someone for who you are, regardless of flaws. That you are perfect the way you are. It's what drew me into the genre in the first place.

But my favorite authors obviously couldn't write a whole book every day, and I could and would consume an ENTIRE book almost every day before I harnessed my writing to live in the worlds in my mind. Plus, I noticed that many of the science fiction books that I read outside of my favorite authors were so very similar from book to book. I needed less easy palette cleansers and more meat and intrigue with my mood reading, but I also really, really needed romance at the forefront.

I needed the Universe of Trillume!

I needed a playground to have fun in, so to speak.

Each story a standalone romance, but layered within a universe that had villains that were heroes in their own stories, political intrigue that was just enough to keep me guessing and surprised from time to time about how things unfold. Sure, I wanted to meet expectations of a HEA and romance that gave the feels, but I needed more flaws and less slice of life feels. Adventure that shows that many characters contribute to a universe crisis and many characters come together across different worlds to solve it.

I love living in the Trillume Universe and it's exactly what I want to read and keeps me excited between reading other alien romances by fellow indie authors!
