What I'm trying to say, is I only want you IF you want to be here, and clicking spam button locks up my account with SendFox so people who DO want to hear from me don't get to see the emails. when they "optimize" my newsletter there are OVER 1,000 people who miss their newsletter when this happens.
Anyways, business matters of spamming aside, I wanted to encourage people to take chances and be awkward.
What does that mean?
It means as long as you are being genuine and aren't coming from a place of selfishness and are actually trying to be helpful and a peach to be around (queue up Jack Black's Peaches song) then remember you are talking to another human being and simply act like it. Don't project your own self deprecation on to strangers, they probably think you're cool.
I take my own advice many times, awkwardly expanding my author contacts one message, email, DM, post at a time.
I told you how I found a new author I fell in love with Etta Pierce and her Convergence alien romance series, I'm almost finished reading book three! Love her, and her style of alien romances is my favorite and what I try to implement in my own alien romances, so I took a chance and reached out to let her know that I read her books, loved them, and shared her books with my newsletter like almost every newsletter for over a week, and told her how many people were excited to join the Etta Pierce Train from my newsletter, and asked if she'd be willing to do an author swap with me and share my books with her newsletter as well. I prefaced she didn't have to, since really I was tooting her horn whether she shared my book or not, but it doesn't hurt to ask for a little author boost.
Indie authors helping indie authors, lift each other up.
Biggest thing I learned from a very early stage in authordom is that you can't be jealous of others successes you have to just be extremely helpful, gracious, and supportive of all authors in various stages of their process. So, I always try to lift other authors up. I don't care if their newsletter is only 100 people, 1,000 people, 3,000, 7,000 or 25,000 people.
I'll be honest with you, I've had my book featured in a 25,000 newsletter author swap and I got 10 clicks on my book, and I got the same about of clicks from a newsletter with only 100 people, while I've received 100+ clicks from newsletters of only 1,000 or 3,000 people. They have a more engaged audience most of the time. I will welcome whatever readers I get, no matter where I get them from.
Anyways, that's my lesson for the day.
Be fearless, be awkward, put yourself out there, and don't be jealous of not being where others are in their process. We all start somewhere. Focus on being helpful, genuine, improving yourself, and lifting others up along with you.
