KDP Paperback update: After more research on Amazon's paperback increases the tables they provided on what the increases would be, it seems like the only increase I will be seeing is the 15 cents fixed cost I described before, which is the increase to the base price of each book. Perhaps it will be the new paperbacks affected by the supposed .005 cent per page increase stated in the all the tables I've seen regarding the increases, and in that case future books would be affected, but based on pulling up my own KDP, Amazon has graciously included an extra row that states what the pricing will be AFTER the new costs in June, and it has only taken 15 cents away. So, I won't have any need to increase any paperback pricing on to my readers. I will happily take 15 cents less so you can enjoy my alien romance books in print.
BARBARIAN MATES: I think I can speak for most of us that there is something primal and fun about reading an alien abduction romance where an alien takes their fated mate prisoner for their own good of course. And in today's indie highlight that's exactly what happens. An alien barbarian saves her from death only to then stake claim as her mate and say she's his prisoner. So, he must not have known about human stubbornness or he might have approached things differently, but then where is the fun in that? I love seeing a strong alpha male bend to the will of his mate when he realizes that what makes him the most happy is when she is happy... and That's a trope I've infused Her Alien Savior with as well, because I want them to save each other.
One thing I've realized is that there really isn't anything in particular about ANY romance, real or fictional, that makes this one person different and meant to be theirs other than proximity and a willingness to see the other happy.
You'd be surprised to really examine most relationships that have lasted the test of time and keep the spark alive has very little to do with whether a person is smart, talented, or a chosen one. And more to do with proximity (Being around when you need them), a biological compatibility (feeling a release of serotonin from their proximity), and the continued persistence of both mates making an effort to see the other happy.
Many relationships fail because of one of these three pillars failing, whether that is proximity (not being around), a lack of serotonin release when they do things for their partner, which then can lead to discontinued action of seeking the partners happiness.
So, is it really fated mates? Or just two people in proximity continuously making a choice to see the other person be happy? You tell me.
