Hey ,
It isn't the first time that I've been told that a reader almost stopped reading my books because they thought Tyler was a dude and thus were thinking that the story was an M/M romance. Not sure what M/M means, it means male with male love interests.
Honestly, I'm okay with people reading the whole entire book/series thinking Tyler is a man. Though, I was pretty sure the cover art with the female/male lead on it was enough to understand that Tyler is a girl, I am well aware that I do not make many comments about appearances within my stories.
I do this on purpose, as a cognizant effort in making the first-person narratives feel more first person. But I also have what is considered a masculine name myself, and I even named my daughter with a name that is equally skewed male, but is a neutral name.
I love it! Because I feel like even names come with bias when people see a name and make assumptions of gender or otherwise. I want to remove those biases by using whatever name I want regardless of the MC's gender.
Many times in my life, people would address me as Mr. In my work emails, or on the phone many would say May I speak to Mr. McCoy after it was obvious that they were speaking to a female and I didn't meet their expectations.
At first, I was irritated by this constant need to correct people. But then, over time, it became more amusing and I liked that each person that I surprised with being female was another soul that I converted to end their own presumptions, thus making more people question why it matters to them so much to label a person before they even know them.
My name being more masculine even helped me overcome that same bias in others. Even in what I read.
I've even had a few people read the sneak peek at book two and get uncomfortable with the affection Tyler has for her best friend Kelly. Tyler is very much crushing on two dudes, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have love for her bestie. But things are complicated because Kelly is very much in love with Tyler. That's life, life is complicated. And I'm okay with my books not being for everyone.
If those things make you uncomfortable then don't read. Books are for enjoyment and the exploration of feelings.
I'm thankful to the readers that got to know Tyler from my story My Abett, which is freesies with this newsletter and even went on to read the book Kingdom of Acatalec. Thank you for joining her world and stepping into her skin for a while!

The romance takes longer to develop, yup.
MC is in a wheelchair, and that doesn't stop her from kicking ass, YESSSS!
It starts off slow, then takes off like a rocket and sucks you into the new world of Acatalec, full of adventure, romance, magic, and a futuristic Seattle with sciencey possibilities like drones as the future of transportation, brain implants like what we see Elon Musk engineering, and contact lenses that connect with it.
